FOOTBALL TO BOXING




The star who played for Manchester United , Leeds , West ham and QPR spanning almost 20 years is currently working with BT Sport and the BBC .





Ex-England defender and former Manchester United player , Rio Ferdinand , 38 , is teaming up with Team GB coach Richie Woodhall and betfair for 'DEFENDER to CONTENDER" . He retired from football in may 2015 , but now is training for his British Boxing Board of Control Licence .






He said "When Betfair approached me about the Defender to contender challenge , the change to prove myself in a new sport was a real draw . Boxing is an amazing sport for the mind and body . I have always had a passion for it and this challenge is the perfect opportunity to show people what possible ".







His love of boxing is apparently on social media , with a picture of the former defender's twitter profile showing him draped in the WBA , IBF , IBO heavyweight title belts of his friend Anthony Joshua . Ferdinand was in attendance when Joshua defeated Wladimir Klitschko at Wembly Stadium in April and posted for picture with the Olympic Gold Medalist . There are also several videos on his Instagram page showing Ferdinand training with the gloves .
